Exploring Montreal's Music Scene as a Music Ambassador from Berlin
From December 2nd to 8th, I had the incredible opportunity to visit Montreal, Canada. I got a special travel grant from Berlin's Music Commission to represent Berlin's music scene as a Music Ambassador. My goal for the trip was to connect the dots between Berlin and Montreal’s ambient electronic music scenes while also performing at Les Vespérales de l'orgue du Sacré-Cœur. This unique concert series is dedicated to original ambient and experimental soundscapes, combining the majestic tones of the pipe organ with electronic music.
Montreal captivated me from the very first moment. The kindness and openness of the people made me feel at home. What stood out to me most was how Montreal nurtures experimental music through supportive funding opportunities and a community that truly appreciates the arts.
Throughout the week, I met inspiring musicians (check them out: Saphonix Collective, Earth World Collaborative), discussed their creative projects, and gained insights into how Montreal’s music ecosystem operates. Moreover, I gave a masterclass on my approach to combining organ music with electronics to organ students at McGill University. It was a lot of fun! I also visited a local organ-building company Juget-Sinclair, which gave me a fascinating look into the craftsmanship behind their instruments. Another highlight was the event support from Suoni per il Popolo, a highly respected local festival.
This trip wasn’t just about building connections but also a chance to reflect on my role as a Berlin-based music ambassador. The insights I gained will help me create new opportunities for Berlin musicians interested in experimental and niche music genres. I see this as the start of a stronger connection between two vibrant music hubs, fostering collaborations that benefit artists in both cities.
If I learned one lesson, it’s this: never underestimate jet lag! Despite the physical challenges, this trip was one of the most inspiring experiences of my career. I’m excited about the doors it could open for future collaborations and projects.
Thank you, Montreal, for an unforgettable week—and here’s to many more exchanges between our creative communities!
